INITIATIVES
Deskan Institute has explored international opportunities by providing Medical Mission and Health Education Activities in South Africa to deliver HIV/AIDS prevention messages to traditional healers and their peers. This is an annual activity.
Deskan Institute has embraced the connection to global health issues such as: HIV/AIDS/STI's, violence, homelessness, and hunger in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lesotho, Caribbean, and Guyana. Deskan outreach teams provide hot food, blankets, personal hygiene products, clothing, hats and gloves to the homeless in metro parks, under bridges, and in makeshift homes. This is a once a month activity. Deskan members have developed advocacy programs that offer a platform for awareness and a voice for health promotion.
FYI...
According to estimates, 100 million people in the world are literally homeless. They have no shelter, they sleep on pavements, in doorways, in parks, under bridges, in public buildings, in railways, bus stations, or in night shelters set up to provide homeless people with a bed.
